The Sherwood Park Athletics are the 2022 Sunburst League Champions after they swept the Sunburst League final 3-0 over the St. Albert Tigers.
The top seeded Athletics got their playoff run off and rolling in the semi-finals as they took on the defending champion Edmonton Cubs in a Best of 3 series. Sherwood Park would take Game 1 of this series 5-4. Jeremy Harasymchuk would pick up the win on the mound with James Fischer picking up the save. Dayton Heino was the big stick for the A's collecting a pair of RBIs while Kern Watts and Ashton Martin had the other RBIs.
In Game 2, Sherwood Park would use a great outing from Ryan Estey to win 5-1 and sweep the series 2-0. Cody McElroy had a pair of hits and two RBIs while Harasymchuk had three hits and an RBI to lead the offsense for the Athletics.
In the Best of 5 finals, the A's would get the offense rolling early in game one and didn't look back in a 9-3 victory. Estey picked up his second win of the playoffs on the bump while Cody Pendergast, Ashton Martin and Jeremy Harasymchuk all had two hits and two RBIs to pace the A's offense.
In Game 2, the Tigers had a 2-1 lead after three innings, but the A's would plate six unanswered runs and take this game 7-2. Harasymchuk grabbed his second win of the playoffs on the hill and also added an RBI double along with three runs. Cody McElroy had a pair of hits and two RBIs while Rejean Bourget had a pair of hits and an RBI for the A's
In game 3, it was an all out slugfest as the two teams combined for 33 runs in this contest with the A's coming out on top 22-11 and sweeping the Best of 5 series 3-0. Dylan Theroux grabbed the win for the Athletics on the mound in the series clinching game. Ashton Martin had a big night with four hits and six RBIs while Kern Watts had a pair of hits including a home run and 4 RBIs.
With the 2022 Sunburst League Championship, Sherwood Park now punches their ticket to the 2023 Canadian Sr. AAA Mens Baseball Tournament which will take place close to home in Red Deer, Alberta. So far, they will be joined by league mates and hosts the Red Deer Riggers and the Burnaby Bulldogs who won the BC Sr AAA Championship earlier in the summer.
