Cartwright Twins Capture 2025 Western Canadian Championship

The Cartwright Twins of the Border Baseball League have won the 2025 Western Canadian Baseball Champiohship. The Twins wrapped up a very impressive weekend of baseball as they defeated the West Winnipeg A's 4 - 2 in the final this past Sunday at Keller Field in Westlock, Alberta. 

 

Cartwright kicked off their tournament on Friday as they played a pair of games on that day. In their morning game, they took on the Parkland Twins from Alberta and won this game by a score of 9 - 3. Maddux Mateychuk collected the win for the Twins as he went four innings allowing two runs (both earned) on two hits while walking four and striking out five. Nick Riglin collected the save going three innings and allwoing one run (earned) on two hits. He walked none and struck out two. Zaine Foth-Thomas took the loss for Parkland throwing two innings allowing three runs (one earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out four. At the plate, the Twins were led by Kaden Rozdeba who was 4-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI while Drew Hillhorst was 1-for-4 with a 2-run HR. Jake Moger was 1-for-3 with a solo HR to lead Parkland. 

 

Later that evening, Cartwright (1 - 0) then took on the host team the Westlock Red Lions (0 - 1) and doubled them in this game by a score of 8 - 4. Kyle Breemersch started for the Twins. He went 3 2/3 innings allowing one run (not earned) on five hits walking none and striking out five. Nick Riglin picked up the win in relief going 1 1/3 innings two runs (both earned) on two hits. Logan Colville took the loss for Westlock going 3 2/3 innings allowing seven runs (all earned) on five hits. He walked a pair of batters striking out one. Offensively, Drew Haight led the way for Cartwright going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI while Drew Hillhorst was 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs. Hayden Chies was 1-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs to lead the way for Westlock

 

On Saturday, the Twins (2 - 0) had their final pool play game as they took on the Carlyle Cardinals (1 - 1) and it was the Cardinals coming up with an 11 - 9 win in this one. Bruce Enns started this game for Cartwright going 4 2/3 innings allowing six runs (all earned) on six hits while walking three and striking out two. Drew Haight took the loss going the final 2 1/3 innings allowing five runs (all earned) on six hits. Cade Bendtsen took the win for Carlyle going 4 1/3 innings in relief allowing five runs (all earned) on eight hits with one strikeout. At the plate, Cartwright was led by Drew Hillhorst who was 3-for-5 with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Connor Drewry and Nick Kummer each had a HR for the Twins as well. Cooper Olson led the Cardinals going 3-for-4 with a HR, a double, a run and three RBIs. 

 

With a 2 - 1 record, the Cartwright club advanced to the semi-finals and another match-up with the Carlyle club (2 - 1). In this game, it was all Cartwright as they took it by a score of 11 - 0. Anthony Friesen went the distance for the Twins going five innings allowing no runs on just one hit while walking one and striking out five. Cooper Olson took the loss going 2/3 of an inning allowing five runs (all earned) on four hits and walking two. At the plate, Cartwright was led again by Kaden Rozdeba who was 4-for-4 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. Bruce Enns (4 RBI), Drew Hillhorst (RBI) and Ty Enns each had a pair of hits for Cartwright as well. Mitch Himmelspach had the lone hit for the Cardinals. 

 

That set up the final between Cartwright (3 - 1) and the undefeated West Winnipeg A's (4 - 0). It was a tight bacjk and forth affair in this one with the Twins coming out of it with a 4 - 2 victory. Maddux Mateychuk grabbed his second win of the weekend going 6 2/3 innings allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits. He walked five batters while striking out nine. Anthony Friesen recorded the final out of the game to record the save. Riley Hruska took the hard luck loss for West Winnipeg going two innings allowing one run (earned) on two hits. Offensively for the Twins, Kaden Rozdeba wrapped up a huge weekend going 2-for-4 with a HR and three RBIs. Ty Enns was 1-for-4 and had the other RBI for Cartwright. Cole Armstrong was 1-for-3 for the A's with an RBI double in a losing cause. 


Congrats to Cartwright and West Winnipeg on some excellent baseball this past weekend. A big congrats to the host committee from Westlock as well for putting on a first class events for all of the attending teams.
